REV DRILL USED FOR PILES AND TIES

Contractor: Foundations Unlimited
Job: MTA- Bethesda, Maryland

In the spring of 2002, Foundations Unlimited, a sheeting and shoring company in Washington, D.C., was contracted to shore part of the MTA railway so utility work could be completed for a new building complex. Foundations Unlimited turned to their Rev Drill Series 4. The job called for 65 piles, 8' on center with 1 tier of ties. The piles were 30' in overall length, to be installed by predrilling with a 36" diameter auger, concreting the toe, and filling the top with lean mix. After the first week all the pile had been installed. Setting piles had to take place at night due to being next to the railway. After excavation to tie-back grade was complete, Foundations Unlimited converted their Rev Drill to install tie-backs. The mast was flipped to approximately 15 degrees, and the kelly bar was switched out with a 4" hollow drill steel. The ties were 45' in length so one ten foot section had to be added to the existing 40' of drill steel. Using a tri-cone roller bit and blowing air with a 350 cfm compressor through a top swivel down through the hollow core motor, the Rev Drill was able to install all sixty ties in four days. Foundations Unlimited was able to use one machine to predrill, excavate and install ties. By bringing all three in-house this ended up being an extremely successful job for Foundations Unlimited.
